Larger teams, though comparatively weaker individually, gain the advantage of health recovery and the ability to execute “assists” or “ensemble attacks,” where an on-screen character summons a teammate for a collaborative move. The game offers a high level of customization, allowing players to assign custom assists, enhancing strategic depth in team composition.

Skullgirls draws inspiration from Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes, incorporating its tag team mechanics, assists, and control scheme. Utilizing six buttons for light, medium, and hard punches and kicks, players can chain together basic attacks to form combos. Special attacks and cinematic super moves known as “blockbusters” add depth to the gameplay, requiring players to manage the dramatic tension meter. The tension gauge fills as the battle progresses, storing up to five bars for executing powerful blockbusters or other universal techniques like “outtakes” and “blockbuster sequels.” Technical features address common issues in fighting games, including the detection and prevention of “infinite combos” and protection against “unblockable attacks.” Infinite combo detection allows players to break free by hitting any button, and the game incorporates a grace period after blocking to defend against various hit types, addressing potential balance concerns.
