Tears of the Kingdom embraces the open-world action-adventure style introduced in Breath of the Wild (2017), featuring Link as the protagonist exploring not only familiar territories like Hyrule but also two new areas—the sky, adorned with floating islands, and the Depths, an expansive underground region beneath Hyrule. Players can traverse these landscapes on foot, on horseback, or by using a paraglider, seeking weapons, resources, and completing quests. Introducing Zonai devices, players can now employ them for combat, propulsion, and exploration, enhancing the gameplay experience. The traditional runes from the previous game have been replaced with five new abilities, such as Ultrahand for object manipulation, Fuse for item combination, Ascend for moving through solid surfaces, Recall for rewinding object movement, and Autobuild for instant device recreation.

The game maintains the inclusion of Shrines and Korok seeds, providing Light of Blessing and inventory expansion respectively when cleared. Shrines offer Heart Containers or Stamina Vessels, enhancing Link’s health or stamina, while Korok seeds can be traded to increase inventory capacity. Additionally, a new recipe system is introduced, allowing players to track ingredients for various meals and elixirs. The presence of Gloom, a red-and-black substance, adds a dynamic challenge to the game, slowing Link and gradually reducing his maximum hearts when in contact. Corrupted enemies in Gloom-infested areas can further exacerbate this effect, requiring strategic navigation and recovery methods for players to overcome these challenges.
